Raise the Roof!

Red Exclamation Mark

SPRING UPDATE

With our renovation project at PUFF / PCC almost 90 % complete a brief update seems appropriate.  The project, totalling $302,000 was funded by the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation ($216,000), and generous donations from the community to the Raise the Roof campaign ($86,000).  Dozens of people from the community have contributed literally thousands of hours to make this possible.  Thanks to everyone.  Everything is finished but the ventilation system in the firehall, which awaits warmer weather.  We are within +/- 1%-3% of our budget target.  Fortunately we have had a capital infusion from assets of the Lake of the Woods Search and Rescue Organization which will easily offset any cost overruns, and may allow us to add a couple of enhancements.  Completed to date are: full size pickle ball court; new roof, with eavestrough; parking lot drainage and new entrance pad for PCC; rapid fill system for the pumper truck; kitchen renovation with new pantry and mezzanine renovations, including extensive re-wiring and electrical upgrades.  We also have a new to us rapid attack four-wheel drive fire truck allowing access to small roads, and our old truck, Pumper 93, has been sold.  The whole project should be wrapped up in time for the annual Pancake Breakfast on the May long weekend and the new truck will be on display (it’s a beast!), so we look forward to seeing you there.

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT!

Raise The Roof / NOHFC Update

Today the Hon. Greg Rickford, MPP for Kenora-Rainy River, Minister of Indigenous Affairs, and Minister of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry, announced that Pellatt United Firefighters / Pellatt Community Centre is receiving a grant from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation for projects totalling over $288,000, to substantially upgrade the PUFF / PCC facilities. This will be a great benefit for the whole community.  PUFF/PCC is responsible for 25% of the costs of these projects, approximately $72,000. Due to your kindness and generosity, we have raised almost this amount of money through the Raise the Roof Campaign.  We trust that you will agree with our decision to apply these funds to the NOHFC projects, which include the following:

–       New roof for PUFF/PCC

–       Firehall ventilation system for the health and safety of our firefighters and first responders

–       Upgraded training facilities for our fire team, which will also make PUFF an attractive location for general training and increase rental opportunities and revenue

–       A rapid discharge water tank to shorten turnaround times for fire response

–       Upgrades to the entranceway to the community centre, for the safety of all community members

–       Upgraded kitchen facilities in the community centre, for use during community events, and to increase rental opportunities

–       Already completed pickle ball court renovations, which have greatly increased community centre usage

From all of us at PUFF/PCC, we thank you for your support over the years.  We look forward to these enhancements, which will help PUFF keep the community safe and secure, and improve everyone’s enjoyment of this great community resource, the Pellatt Community Centre.

If you have any questions or concerns, please email us at pellattfire@gmail.com

PUFF provides fire protection for the four townships of Pellatt, Pelican Umbach and Gidley

PCC is a community hall built to enhance our community for health, well-being and public education.

Dear friends of Pellatt United Fire Fighters and Pellatt Community Centre,

The roof of the PUFF / PCC building is leaking and must be replaced to avoid permanent damage to the building. We are announcing a Raise the Roof campaign with the goal of raising $100,000.  The cost of a premium roof that will last 60 years has been quoted at between $94,000 and $123,000. The fasteners on the current roof have been tightened so that it will last another winter.  We hope to have sufficient funds to do the replacement in March of 2022.

Fire services, emergency first response medical services and the community centre depend on completion of this repair.  We all benefit from these services, and from reduced insurance premiums due to proximity to the firehall.

We have applied for grants to offset the cost of the roof replacement, but we do not know whether we will receive them.  Residents of the area served by PUFF / PCC have been incredibly generous over the years.  We ask that this year rather than donating to the Endowment Fund that you consider donating to the Raise the Roof campaign by buying a piece of the roof.

One square foot of new roof costs $10.  All donations over $20 will receive a tax receipt.  Donations over $100 will be recognized with a wall plaque in the community centre.

Bronze Level $100
Silver Level $200
Gold Level $500
Platinum Level $1,500
Diamond Level $5,000

E-transfers can be sent to pellattfire@gmail.com where we’re set up for auto-deposit so no security question required! Cheques can be sent to P.U.F.F. Box 1, Site 6B, RR 1, Keewatin, Ontario, P0X 1C0 indicating they are for the Raise the Roof campaign. You will receive an email tax receipt for e-transfers unless you would prefer a receipt by mail, in which case, please enter your mailing address in the message section. Tax receipts for cheques will be sent by mail.

All donors will be entered in a draw for a barbecue rib dinner for 15 people provided by George and Donna Goossen.

Your support is so much appreciated by the whole community.  Please give generously.

Sincerely,

PUFF / PCC Raise the Roof Committee
